Em conferência de imprensa, José Manuel Coelho esclareceu que o seu "partido foi o único a votar contra, não porque esteja ou seja contra a Madeira e os madeirenses, mas porque não quer votar a favor da irresponsabilidade de a Região poder se endividar até ao infinito".
Para o dirigente da Nova democracia, "a campanha de desinformação" começou em Lisboa com o líder parlamentar do PSD na Assembleia da República, Aguiar Branco. Coelho diz que a lei agora aprovada, "vai trazer dinheiro a molhe" para Alberto João Jardim "gastar como quer e entende".
